Fundamentals of Leadership for Healthcare Professionals
Abstract
Leadership is an imprecise science at best. In the modern health-care setting, it is both difficult and impractical to rely on highly hierarchical and positional leadership paradigms of the past. Instead, more flexible, adaptable, and scalable leadership dynamics emerge. In this chapter, we discuss the evolution of surgical leadership, beginning with the militaristic historical origins, and arriving at today's focus on teams, respectful interaction, objectivity, accountability, and focus on mutual understanding and support. Emphasis will be placed on leveraging the surgeon leader as a central team player who stands at the interface of key cross-disciplinary organizational linkages.
