Endovascular Interventions: A Case-Based Approach

Abstract

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States with approximately 600,000 cases of clinically significant pulmonary embolism (PE) and 200,000 deaths. Most VTE originates from lower extremity deep vein thrombosis (DVT), but upper extremity DVT constitutes 1–4 % of all DVTs and 18 % of DVTs among hospitalized patients. Anticoagulation with warfarin, unfractionated heparin, low-molecular-weight heparin, fondaparinux, or related agents remains the standard therapy for DVT and PE. This therapy is effective in preventing and treating VTE. When anticoagulation is contraindicated or ineffective, vena cava interruption with a filter device constitutes an alternative therapy.
