Abstract
Mechanical small bowel obstruction (SBO) is a surgical disorder of the small intestine responsible for 2% of emergency department (ED) visits for abdominal pain and represents 15% of all surgery admissions from the ED. A diagnostic meta-analysis in 2013 quantified the accuracy of history and physical examination for the diagnosis of SBO based on two publications meeting their inclusion criteria. The American Association for the Surgery of Trauma recommends a computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen and pelvis with water-soluble contrast follow through to distinguish partial from complete obstruction. In a prospective crosssectional study of patients with clinical evidence of bowel obstruction, Two studies evaluated MRI for suspected SBO and demonstrate similarly superb accuracy to rule in or rule out SBO. Few high-quality comparative accuracy studies of clinical exam or different imaging modalities for suspected SBO exist.
